"Lie Na Lie"

“Lie Na Lie”

 “Lie Na Lie”

Hello, T.G.I.F. I hope your week was good? I want to talk about lies and lying. I receive the unction in Jesus name, Amen. “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor” Eph. 4:25

“Lie,” says Miriam Webster’s dictionary means, “(1) To make an untrue statement with intent to deceive.  (2) Create a false or misleading impression. (3) To bring about by telling lies. (4) marked by or containing falsehoods.” To “equivocate” implies using words having more than one sense so as to seem to say one thing but intend another. “Palter” implies to act insincerely or deceitfully “Fib” applies to telling of a trivial or childish lie” So all these little things are under the heading of “LIE.” Do you see how many different ways a person can lie?

Parents and guardians alike lie to their children and ward in trying to pacify or get them to do something they want or make promises they do not intend to keep. Worse still they make them lie on their behalf to people they probably do not want to see. People tell lies on the telephone. Even at their work place because their boss asked them to. Spouses lie to one another in the name of keeping the peace, employers and employees just the same. Advertisers lie to sell products. Most politicians are habitual liars.

Many Christians do not see lying as the grievous sin that it is. Some Christians would get fanatical about a dress mode or wouldn’t consider seeing a type of movie or attending a party, yet they will lie at the drop of a hat. Some don’t mind misleading others…in the name of good business.

Did you know that Slander, Tale Bearing, Flattery, Half Truths and Exaggerations to mention a few are all “siblings” of the same diabolical parent called lies?

Let me share this story with you. I got it from another minister. A minister once told about a store manager who heard his clerk tell a customer, “No, madam, we haven’t had any for a while, and it doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting any soon.” Horrified, the manager came running over to the customer and said, “Of course we’ll have some soon. We placed an order last week.” Then the manager drew the clerk aside. “Never,” he snarled, “Never, never, never say we’re out of anything- say we’ve got it on order and it’s coming. Now, what was it she actually wanted anyway?” The clerk replied, “We were just talking about the delay in this year’s rain!”

I’ve also heard some people tell what they term “white harmless” lies (Whatever that means?) and half truths. The thing is there is no lie that is harmless. A lie is a lie. Even Excuses are just “dressed up” lies. God actually lined up lying amongst the seven sins He hates most. It is number two on the list. “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” Proverbs. 6:16-17

I personally believe it is the devil’s strategy against the Christian. I’ve never once heard an entire sermon on lying. I have heard a few that contained some lies, however. These seven mentioned in Proverbs 6:16-19 hardly get the kind of attention other sins get. Yet it is lined up along with the ones God hates the most. I believe Satan has distracted and blinded the church from these and amplified the “lesser” sins to make us commit more of the grievous ones that God hates most without thinking. That is just how much he hates mankind. Now do not get me wrong, a sin is a sin and they carry the same penalty, death (separation from God). I mean that in all its ramifications. But thank God for Jesus, where would we be without Him?

Mark Twain said “a lie can travel halfway around the world while truth is still lacing up her boots”. It’s natural for the Adamic nature to lie, and there’s something about our nature that enjoys it… it lies and loves lying”. Lying is easy, but the truth is hard most times. Do you do what you say you will do? Do you tell the truth even when it will cost you something? Is your word your bond? We say honesty pays, but actually most times it costs. But doing right is right. Jesus said “let your yes be yes and no be no” Matt 5:37, “but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.” James 5:12b that is integrity, which is supposed to be the hallmark of the Christian.

Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees in John 8:44 He told them saying Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it
So the truth is, we make ourselves a lot like Satan when we lie because he is the father of it. Almost every time we see the devil in Scripture he’s lying, right from the book of Genesis to Revelation.

When we tell lies in whatever form we identify with the devil. (He is the father of lies) (John 8:44). We yield to him our members (in this case our tongue for speaking) as instruments or tool for his work of destruction Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” Romans 6:13 He started it way back before Adam was created. Through lies he deceived a third of the angels in heaven to follow him. “And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth…” Revelation 12:4a He continued with man in the Garden of Eden “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die” Genesis 3:4 with a lie that man will not die if he disobeyed God. That was in fact trying to indict God, calling Him a liar as well.

On the other hand, the truth shall always make you free. Sometimes it may appear negative or even put you in serious trouble but the word of God is always true. You shall come out of it better for it because “the truth (Jesus) shall make you free” John 8:32

When you tell the truth in any form, you identify with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is “the way, the truth and the life” John 14:6 we yield our bodies as instruments or tools for the work of righteousness Romans 6:13

You can overcome lying. Love the truth. This is a heart change. David spoke of “truth in the inward parts.” Psalm 51:6 You see, a person is not a liar because they tell lies…they tell lies because they are a liar. We need an inward change. 2Thess. 2:10 says “…because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved” Learn the truth (JESUS), love Him.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”. Philippians 4:8 Saturate your mind with good things, love the Word of God. The truth sets you free. It’s how Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness, with the truth of the Scripture! Live the truth. “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor” Eph. 4:25 it is what you can do. Caution yourself when you want to gossip or slander. Repent of it and immediately commit yourself back to the truth. It is never too late as long as you are still alive. You can repent of it, humble yourself like the scripture says Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” 1Pet 5:6 and ask God to help you.

You can do it. God will never ask you to do what you cannot do. You have to set your will in motion and watch the Spirit of God empower you to achieve it. You will reap the good of the land and testify to His goodness. Amen.
