“Call No Man Your Father Upon The Earth” Matthew 23:9

Father God in obedience to your word, I ask that you guide my thoughts to deliver only what will edify your people so all glory will go to you and remain yours in Jesus Name, Amen.

Again this may be one of those very controversial topics (needless though) I am sure a number of people will ignorantly kick against it. Often times we stubbornly and poignantly want to remain in our “comfort zone” vehemently claiming that we are fully persuaded in our beliefs. But like usual, I can only employ you to please search the scriptures diligently for yourself and if you find anything contrary please trash this write-up and do me a favour. Please, please and please let me know your findings. Call or write me. My contacts are at the end of this write up. I do not at all claim omniscience but that which I am very sure of, I talk about. If there is anything contrary, I would love to know. Thank you.

I want to address what has become a tradition, a great phenomenon in the Church of Jesus Christ. It has become customary or what I term a Pentecostal Orthodoxy for most Pentecostal Christians especially to address their Pastors or as the case may be the “General Overseer” of their Church as “Daddy G.O.” and their wives as “Mummy G.O.” or simply “Mummy and Daddy” or “Papa and Mama.” Then the Roman Catholic Church call their priests “Father”, based on scriptures I strongly disagree.

You might say to me “Look it’s none of your business, stop criticizing these people, let the Holy Spirit convict them” But, wait a minute, didn’t the scriptures say something on that? “Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.” Titus 1:9-11 It didn’t start today.

We are in the last days, there is no debating that. Let me ask you these pertinent questions. Is the body of Christ as we know it today not in need of revival? How much of the full gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is being preached today? Has the Church not succumbed to the spirit of mammon, the prosperity message at the detriment of the full gospel? And please don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with prosperity but there must be a balance. When the Lord gave me this assignment from the scriptures I felt so very inadequate. I was still a very young newly converted Christian as at then. I asked Him how this was going to be seeing that I knew next to nothing of the scriptures and I have seen and heard “Big” ministers on Radio and the Television teaching and preaching with signs and wonders following. He simply referred me to a scripture “…My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a. It took several long years for me to start grasping the full import of those scriptures and what they meant to the body of Christ. I now understand better when God said to His people in Hosea 4:6a “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Knowledge has always been the issue with us. The average child of God wallows in abysmal ignorance of the scriptures concerning the God he claims to love and serve. That is because we are LAZY at reading the Bible. Most of our ministers are not helping matters either. In black and white, scripture says that when Jesus “… ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.” Ephesians 4:8  “…he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:” Ephesians 4:11-13 it saysFor the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, but what do we have? We have it twisted backwards. The ministers do the work of the ministry while the rest of the body fold their hands and wallow in self aggrandizement. We are too busy chasing after money. No wonder Jesus said “… The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;” Matthew 9:37

Some of the people of God can fast, pray, display great spiritual gifts and several other wonders but when it comes to the knowing, there is a great hiatus in the body. That is generally because we do not spend enough time in His presence to ‘study the scriptures to the extent that God is proud of us’ 2 Timothy 2:15. So now, like Paul I can say too “…Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9b I learn everyday as I walk the walk with my saviour Jesus Christ.

I am called to point out to the people of God who have chosen deliberately or ignorantly to go against the scriptures and follow the traditions of men. I am to shine the light of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to expose the dangers and the ecclesiastical futility entrenched in such endeavour. Like scriptures warn in these two verses Mark 7:7-8 “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.” There’s more…

Colossians 2:8 “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” I am like the whistle blower. I have to call their attention to what I notice they are doing wrong from the scriptures. Romans 10: 14 says to those ignorant of the knowledge of the true God “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” someone has to do the talking. That’s where I come in.

Jesus taught us saying “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 but we have it backwards.

Daddy and Mummy who? It is usually very uniquely absurd to me when I see these ministers answer to these appellations; they even take pride in it. Most often these titles come from people who are even much older than them. Somebody somewhere started it and it became a fad even way back in the Bible days. The thing is if it’s a tradition, God is not against tradition as long as it remains on its path but if it contradicts the scriptures? That tradition must be trashed.

They readily explain it away that “YOU NEED SOMEONE YOU CAN CALL A SPIRITUAL FATHER” for you to be an effective or successful Christian. But really, how did we get here?

To answer that question, somehow I believe it must be Paul’s statement to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 4:15 when he said “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

Now hold on a minute, is there a contradiction? I thought Jesus said in Matthew 23:9 “…call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven?”

He sure did. How come Paul is calling these people his children? Looks to me like a paradox in scriptures doesn’t it? Well, No sir, nothing like that. For a better understanding of the CONTEXT let’s back up a bit to verse eight of that chapter and a couple more other scriptures after.

Matthew 23:8-11But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; (The Greek word here for master is the word kathegetes, (pronounced kath-ayg-ay-tace’) it means a guide, figuratively a teacher. He said He, Christ is your teacher and guide) and all ye are brethren. (Did you get that? all ye are brethren He said you are all brothers. That means from the same family, same father. How can you be calling your own brother from the same father your on father?) And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. (This is the bomb, NO MAN means exactly that-NO MAN. Not your biological brother, Pastor nor the General overseer. You are all siblings) Neither be ye called masters (Don’t let them call you master either) for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant”.

The trillion dollar questions: Does it mean Paul never saw this part of the scriptures or he just didn’t understand what the Lord had said earlier on in His ministry? Could it be the Lord didn’t mean what He said? Let me give you a little background to that statement. Jesus was at a meeting talking to both the crowd and His disciples about the behaviour of the scribes and the Pharisees, these are religious leaders. He was dealing with their hypocrisy when He made that statement. He was talking to spiritual heads of organisations like we have today in the Church, Pastors and Priests in our case. Don’t call your spiritual leaders father or daddy or papa as the case may be. That was what the Lord told them. “What about the women?” You may ask. Are they exempt? No way. The Lord did not mention women because He was talking about Spiritual leadership. In the Spirit “…there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 So, there was no need to be picking them one by one for the crowd He was addressing understood Him.

Let me take you back to some other scriptures to help you understand why there seem to be a paradox in these two scriptures, though there is absolutely nothing like that here. But before the scriptures let me draw your attention to something I believe would help you understand this topic.

NOTICE: like you very much know, when it comes to giving birth here on earth it is a must to have a male and a female come together for there to be a conception, but it is not so in the spirit world, it is the direct opposite. I will explain.

Now the scriptures; right from the book of Genesis, we learnt that “…God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” God gave man life; I believe you already know that. Genesis 1:27 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7. Until the breath of God came into him, man was just “dust of the ground.” In Numbers 16:22b and 27:16. Moses called God “…the God of the spirits of all flesh…” In the New Testament, the author of the book of Hebrews wrote “Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?” Hebrews 12:9

Now hear me, if in the beginning God created man in His image and likeness then went on to put a part of Himself, His breath in man to make man a living soul and Moses had the revelation to call Him the God of all spirits and in the New Testament because of the relationship we have with Him through the blood of Jesus Christ He is rightly referred to as the Father of spirits. That is because you, as a human being are a spirit that lives in a physical body. This is where I’m going. You are a spirit. God “gave birth” to you directly. That is where He claims ownership, in the Spirit for “God is Spirit” John 4:24

When you got born again, it was your Spirit Man that was regenerated, nothing happened to the physical. I am talking SPIRIT here. Once you move away from the physical into the spirit, for that is what it is when you call a spiritual leader father as in “My father in the Lord or Daddy or Mummy” That is even the most ridiculous of the whole mess –Mummy in the Lord” There is no female spirit. (That is another topic on its own)

Now pay attention to this: for lack of a better analogy at this point, let me use the man and woman relationship. In the physical like I said earlier, there was the need for your earthly father and mother, male and a female to conjugate, the man had to plant a seed in the woman for you to become. It took two people for you to happen. Did you notice that when you became a child, you did not call your mother “father” You called her Mother. Why? The SEED that formed you came from the man and not her,.The father is the male who donated the seed that brought life to the woman’s egg. Do you know that the blood that flows in a child comes only from the father? The mother’s blood never mixes with that of the child in the womb. (Permit me a little digression here: That’s why Jesus was born sinless. Mary was an ordinary woman born through natural means. If her blood mixed with that of Jesus,  that would have made Him a sinner automatically for “sin came into the world through one man…” Romans 5:12. Details for another day)

Now back to our talk. That is a type of what you have in the spirit. God “Donated” the spirit that got born again through the ministration of a minister, male or female – the “Mother” if you will, so he is spirit just like his legitimate donor Father, God. For that person to turn around and call you, a human being their spiritual FATHER would be wrong, in fact blasphemous, It will be like you calling your mother, “father” The spirit that got born again DID NOT come from you, it came from God. That is why God is referred to as the Father and God of all spirits Ephesians 4:6

Don’t forget, many New Testament scriptures refer to the Church as the Bride of Christ. One of them is 2 Corinthians 11:2 – “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” So if the Church is the bride, (female – wife) how can members of that same body be the “male – Father?” When 2 Corinthians 5:18 tells us that “…all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliationit means exactly that. In reconciling the world back to God, He uses us as “spiritual wombs” to birth a new life in Christ. So ultimately, we cannot claim fatherhood to the extent that we are referred to as “father” by our spiritual children. We can rightly call them our children like a mother calls her children but they cannot call us their spiritual father. That is strictly a title for The Creator God.

When it comes to the spirit, it is the solo effort of the Almighty God that does it. God and God alone gave you life. You cannot call your brother in the Lord father. It is not allowed. Jesus said you are siblings (“…all ye are brethren.” Matthew 23:8b) regardless the office he occupies. It took faith on your part to believe God and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour for the transformation to take place. “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26

God does not and will not share His glory with any man “I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” Isaiah 42:8

This is what Jesus meant when He made that statement, “Call no man your father on earth”. He was addressing religious organisation leaders, “spiritual” heads if you will. Then you say “But Paul called the Corinthians his children” true he did and you can as well. There is no scripture that says you cannot call the people you brought to the Lord your “Child or Children” in the Lord. Like a mother will call the children she gave birth to “my children” but they CANNOT call her Father, Daddy or Papa as the case may be. Jesus says YOU ARE ALL BROTHERS –EQUAL. Matthew 23:8b YOUR real “FATHER in the Lord” is no one else but God Himself.

That sounds contradictory right? How can you call someone your child in the Lord but they can’t call you “Father”? Well, I don’t have any other answers to that, I just showed you scriptures based on what I know. Jesus said it Himself. God cannot and does not contradict Himself. If that is how He wants it, that is how you must give it to Him. He does not expect you to understand it but just believe it and walk with Him by faith. You were the instrument that He used to achieve a purpose and that is all. Allowing that appellation is like taking the place of God in the people’s lives which is impossible. Like I told you earlier, God does not and will not share His glory with any man. Isaiah 42:8. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ has been our shield thus far but like the scripture says “…Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” Romans 6:1

When the Bible called Abraham “Father of us all” in Romans 4:16 it was not out of place. Remember God specifically handpicked him for a purpose, to raise a people unto Himself, Israel. It is not the same with any other religious leader. Like the first Adam, he was the foundation “tool” for a purpose.

In the New Testament, we have a different covenant with God through Jesus Christ. We are a totally different spices of people that never existed before “…ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” 1 Peter 2:9 and at the close of time we become the united body of The Christ just as we are now spiritually.

God sent Jesus, the last Adam who is our life giver as well 1 Corinthians 15:45 to lay the foundation and that is where we must all build if we want it to amount to anything. ”For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11. For now like I said earlier, Grace allows almost anything. That is why we have not had instant judgment like in the case of king Nebuchadnezzar. Jesus constantly intercedes for us “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34

This can never be over emphasized. Let’s see that scripture again. Jesus said in Matthew 23:8-11But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. (He said all ye are brethren don’t call anyone your (spiritual) master you are all brothers. That means from the same family, same Spiritual Father. God is not partial Romans 2:11) And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. (Again, No Man Means No Man. That includes your pastor and his wife. When it comes to the things of the spirit, God and God alone is your Father. Not your pastor or whoever that was instrumental to your coming to the Lord) Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Then you say “but the Bible says to ‘give honour to whom it is due’” Romans 13:7 that is very true, that is the more reason you should be more discerning, Jesus said in Luke 20:25 “…Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.”  This one belongs to God, so give it to Him. If anything at all, all these ‘papas’ ‘mamas’ and ‘daddies’ should be called your servants if they want to be great. So says the scriptures, I didn’t write them.

Let’s read Paul’s statement again “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 1 Corinthians 4:15. Did you see the underlined words? “In Christ Jesus” that is the reference to the spiritual. The gospel of Jesus Christ was the vehicle that produced the children not you as in the case of a natural flesh birth. You were just a willing instrument for the purpose. God and only God does the birthing and wants the glory for Himself, rightly so too for it belongs to Him. He is the father of spirits as we saw in the scriptures.

A man made of the “dust of the ground” CANNOT birth a spirit being. Jesus said in John 3:6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Note the underlined word with the capital “S” in the word “Spirit” that is a reference to the Spirit of God.

Maybe you were ignorant of this before but not anymore, now you know. So you need to make amends. You the minister that basks in the euphoria of a misplaced ecclesiastical eulogy, please repent of this. God will not share his glory with anyone and that includes you. Grace (by that I mean Jesus for He is our intercessor Romans 8:34) He does a lot to protect us in this dispensation but this Grace should not be taken for granted. “…the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” Acts 17:30

So, in conclusion…Call No Man Your Father Upon The Earth” Matthew 23:9

God bless you as you repent and obey His word.
